2. Emerging Markets Challenge
Application: mPedigree
Developer/Company: mPedigree
Application Description:
mPedigree
allows anyone in a developing nation with a mobile phone to receive
up-to-date drug pedigree information right at the point of purchase,
enabling individuals to find out if a medication is genuine or not
before using it. It works via text messaging, accessible by default on
all Nokia phones. Similar to the popular scratch card method for
replenishing cellular talk-time, individuals reveal a single-use code
on the drugs, and send a free text message to a provisioned mobile
shortcode identical on all cellular networks. This model enables
manufacturers to conduct product recalls with minimal risks, while
providing the opportunity for large-scale automated intelligence
gathering by law-enforcement agencies to administer quick arrests based
on the frequency of fake drug SMS responses in a specific area.

3. Technology Showcase
Application: PhotoMap
Developer/Company: Johannes Schöning at the Institute for Geoinformatics at the University of Münster, Germany
Application Description:
One use of GPS-enabled phones is support for navigation and maps. There
are many services that allow individuals to download a map of a given
location to a GPS-enabled phone. But the information may not match the
user’s current activity and needs. With PhotoMap,
individuals can grab a map shown on a public display – such as one in a
city center or at a train station – by taking a photograph of it, and
using it as a digital map on the mobile phone (the application is
optimised for use with the Nokia N95).

Application: Mobile Ticketing (Ticketek)
Developer/Company: Orugga (www.orugga.com)
Description:
PersonalTicket is a Series 40 and S60 application that provides mobile access to Ticketek (www.ticketek.com.ar),
the largest ticket broker in Argentina (as well as Australia and New
Zealand). Using barcodes, the application allows you to use your Nokia
phone in place of printed tickets. It eliminates traditional paper
tickets and, as is common in North America, printing out tickets on a
printer at home. The developer, based in Argentina, worked together
with Ticketek and mobile operator Telecom Personal, to produce this
mobile application.

Description:
DigitalICS
(Digital Internal Control System) enables agricultural co-ops to
inspect and evaluate the growing practices of their members, upload the
data to a website for reporting and analysis, and to verify/determine
member credentials and adherence to standards, such as Fair Trade
Certified and Certified Organic. It is currently in use by CEPCO, the
Oaxacan State Coffee Producers Network (1,341 producers in 20

Developer/Company: knfb Reading Technology
Application Description:
The kReader Mobile
from knfb Reading Technology is a major advancement in portability and
functionality of print access for struggling readers and those learning

2. Emerging Markets:
Application: Nano Ganesh
Developer/Company: Santosh Ostwal
Description:
Frequent power cuts in India pose many challenges to farmers in rural
regions. Often farmers find it difficult to get enough power to
irrigate the land for seasonal crops. Santosh Ostwal developed Nano Ganesh,
a water pump solution, which not only helps farmers to remotely start
the pumpsets, but also helps to check if there is sufficient power
supply. Ostwal developed a mobile modem, which controls the starter of
the pumpset. The modem along with a mobile phone, which interfaces a
440 volt system, is attached to the starter panel of the pumpset.
Compared to similar solutions, Nano Ganesh uses the basic voice call
feature to trigger the pumpset, which is more reliable than SMS. To
make the phones easily accessible to the farmer community, Ostwal
deployed basic phones like the Nokia 1100.
